Loneliness Awareness Week
This week, (15 to 21 June) is Loneliness Awareness Week. It gives us an opportunity to talk about loneliness and the effects it can have on mental and physical health. And what we can do to alleviate it.
This year's theme, “Giving Loneliness a Voice”, encourages open and honest conversations so that people feel understood, supported and less alone. For many people, practical care and emotional connection go hand in hand - and that is where CKH Care's services can make a real difference.
Why tackling loneliness matters
Loneliness is more than simply being on your own. It can be the feeling of being disconnected, unheard or unsupported, even when other people are around. Changes such as bereavement, ill health, reduced mobility, moving home, retirement or caring responsibilities can all increase the risk of isolation. That is why the right support is not only about meeting care needs, but also about helping people stay connected to the people, places and routines that matter most to them.
How CKH Care's care at home services can help
- Regular visits that provide friendly conversation, reassurance and a familiar face.
- Support with day-to-day routines, helping you or your loved one to remain safe, comfortable and independent at home.
- Encouragement to take part in hobbies, activities and community life where possible, especially within our safe and supportive retirement housing or extra care communities .
- Help with attending appointments, local groups or social outings, reducing barriers created by mobility or confidence.
- Companionship-led support that values listening, trust and meaningful human connection.
- Tailored care that recognises each person's circumstances, preferences and emotional wellbeing.
For individuals who may be feeling isolated, especially older residents or people living alone, this kind of support can help rebuild confidence and create more opportunities for connection. It can also bring reassurance to families, knowing that their loved one is receiving not just practical assistance, but compassionate, person-centred care that supports overall wellbeing.
Supportive communities
Both our retirement housing and extra care communities offer supported housing that can help you to socialise as much as you want. Our communities have vibrant social calendars with regular events such as games clubs, crafting, coffee morning, lunches and evening entertainment. And of course there is bingo! Our staff can help you to socialise and meet new people when you move in and your neighbours will help you to settle in to your new home.
Giving loneliness a voice in our communities
Loneliness Awareness Week reminds us that loneliness is a natural human emotion, but it should never be something people feel they have to face in silence. By talking more openly, checking in with one another and making support easier to access, we can help create stronger and more connected communities. CKH Care's services have an important role to play by combining practical help with the human connection that can make such a meaningful difference.
This Loneliness Awareness Week, it is worth taking a moment to think about who in our communities may need a little extra support. Whether through a conversation, a visit or ongoing care, small acts of connection can have a lasting impact.
