Support an older person to have a merry Christmas

If you know someone who lives on their own, offering a little extra help around the festive season could make it easier for them to enjoy all the delights December has to offer.

Make time for a catch up

Advent is a busy time as preparations are in full swing, but just making the time to call can brighten someone’s day. If you want to visit, it is a good idea to check ahead of time.

Shop together

Whether on the hunt for the perfect presents or stocking up on seasonal favourites, Christmas shopping can be enjoyable for some and stressful for others. Having another pair of hands to help with the trolley or a second opinion on the best gift can make the day much more fun.

Go digital deal hunting

Many older people love to get online and are very confident to browse their favourite retailers. However, it can’t hurt to ask if someone would like some help to find the best price or knows how to check if a website is secure. Those who can’t get online themselves may appreciate the offer of help.

Deck the halls

We all have different tastes and traditions, but it is always true that decorating the house can take a lot of time and energy. Not everyone wants to go all out, but some people may say they are not interested in Christmas while they are hiding that they can’t manage the exertion of putting up and taking down the decorations. Ask if they like the idea of a few seasonal decorations around the place and follow their lead.

Get out and about

Whether you just drive around to look at the lights, go to see the display at a local garden centre, or join a festive event, getting out of the house can be a great way to enjoy the festivities without any responsibility for cooking, decorating, or preparing the home. Joining an event with other people of a similar age could also be a way to make new connections to carry into the New Year too.

Ask the CKH Care team to help

Living far away from elderly parents or relatives can be tough as it isn’t easy to check in or offer to help in these small ways. Our CKH Care team can step in to take care of the practical things that make a difference. Around Christmas, we can support with present shopping, baking or getting to social events as well as the regular care and support we offer year-round.  Plus, our friendly team always enjoy a nice chat and form great relationships with the people we support. If you’d like to talk about how we can help your loved ones, call us on 01733 396484 or  get in touch online.
